Blogging is an ever popular mode of self expression for people all across the world, especially now that services like WordPress offer users a robust and comprehensive platform for setting up and maintaining blogs. It is easier than ever to get a good looking blog up and running, which is inspiring many users to get into the desirable pursuit of blogging for money. In something like a new virtual American dream, millions of WordPress bloggers are taking up the keyboard and publishing their own articles, hoping to turn their pages into cash flow. But how are the bloggers of the world going about monetizing their pages, and how can you get on board?

The most common way to start making money from a blog is to host advertisements on your page. As a starting blogger, probably with a relatively small readership, there may be some difficulty in finding ads. You may not be able to draw in advertisers and sell space on your pages the way some websites do, but many blogs of all kinds are opting for pay per click advertisements. Under this arrangement, you sign up with a service that displays ads on your pages, and you earn a set amount of money every time someone clicks on your ads.

A growing problem with pay per click ads, however, is the fact that more and more readers are browsing the web with ad blockers. When this is the case, many readers don’t even see your ads, much less click on them. There are other ways to monetize your blog, of course. One popular way to start bringing in cash is merchandising. This is an especially good option for blogs with a loyal and diverse group of readership. Offering customized merchandise bearing your blog’s name not only brings in money through orders, but also serves as a means of publicity to further spread your name.

You don’t even have to sell your own merchandise to make money off of your blog. Many bloggers choose to become affiliated with outside companies and help sell these companies’ products on their own pages. Affiliate linking programs display shopping links on your blog, and a commission is awarded every time a sale originates from users clicking on these links. Like many things in life, this is not as easy as it sounds. Many blogs who try to make money through affiliate linking are frustrated by the initially slow flow of clicks and sales, but those with knowledge and dedication can turn a profit from these arrangements.

There will always be ways for bloggers to make money, but as the face of the internet grows and changes, additional creativity will be required. Turning a blog into a source of income is never as simple as choosing a WordPress hosting theme, and in fact requires more work than many imagine. The best way to start is by making your blog more popular–if no one reads your pages, you’ll never make a penny from them.
