Cafe Coffee Day’s (CCD) offended Indians feelings by making a humour about Mahatama Gandhi on its Twitter account on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. On Saturday, the CCD tweeted: “Good morning tweeps… Bapu aaj zinda hote toh CCD jaroor aate (if Bapu was alive, he’d surely come to CCD).”

Unfortunately, the message didn’t go down well with others online, who called the tweet ‘a cheap sales pitch’ and one in ‘bad taste’. Said a tweeter, “This is a new abyss in direct advertising and CCD should be hauled to coals for this bizarre attempt.”

Within an hour of the negative reactions, the chain swung into damage control mode, posting apologies on its page. “Apparently, a lot of you took the Bapu tweet too seriously. Sincere apologies guys, it was just in good humour. Sorry once again! We look up to Bapuji for his contributions and the tweet was in no way meant as disrespect or a sales pitch. Apologies if we offended anyone!”
