promoted tweets
Up until now, Twitter's ads have only appeared on Twitter.com, users who access the service through apps like TweetDeck haven't seen promoted tweets. Twitter charges for these tweets on a cost per engagement model i.e advertisers pay whenever someone clicks through to a link, retweets the ad, or follows the advertiser. The company says that promoted tweets have thus far seen an engagement rate of around 5%.

So far, advertising appears to be the key to Twitter's revenue plans, and a great deal of Twitter activity occurs via third-party apps.Twitter has not yet decided how and when it will implement this, but soon it will merge the promoted tweets with third party apps.

Recently, Shilpa Shetty tweeted "News that things are falling apart a week before the games begin and how! Athletes are pulling out due to health and safety concerns...just makes me cringe. The team that works on this tool is the one behind Trendly, which Twitter had acquired in June. Trendly was all about highlighting important changes in the traffic that reaches your website, and, according to Hoffman, Twitter’s analytics solution will show you which tweets are spreading and which users are influential in your network. Which is quite helpful for users.

The product will be free as said by soruces, then Twitter won’t be making any money out of it. This is bad news for companies that are building their versions of Twitter analytics tools, some that come to mind are Klout, Omniture and Twitalyzer. Maybe twitter will launch two versions of its Realtime analytics, one would be free version and other can be a paid one.

Twitter fixes the ‘onMouseOver’ bug

Posted on September 22, 2010

The short story: This morning at 2:54 am PDT Twitter was notified of a security exploit that surfaced about a half hour before that, and we immediately went to work on fixing it. By 7:00 am PDT, the primary issue was solved. And, by 9:15 am PDT, a more minor but related issue tied to hovercards was also fixed.

The longer story: The security exploit that caused problems this morning Pacific time was caused by cross-site scripting (XSS). Cross-site scripting is the practice of placing code from an untrusted website into another one. In this case, users submitted javascript code as plain text into a Tweet that could be executed in the browser of another user.

They discovered and patched this issue last month. However, a recent site update (unrelated to new Twitter) unknowingly resurfaced it.
twitter bug 300x200
Early this morning, a user noticed the security hole and took advantage of it on Twitter.com. First, someone created an account that exploited the issue by turning tweets different colors and causing a pop-up box with text to appear when someone hovered over the link in the Tweet. This is why folks are referring to this an “onMouseOver” flaw -- the exploit occurred when someone moused over a link.

Other users took this one step further and added code that caused people to retweet the original Tweet without their knowledge.

This exploit affected Twitter.com and did not impact their mobile web site or their mobile applications. The vast majority of exploits related to this incident fell under the prank or promotional categories. Users may still see strange retweets in their timelines caused by the exploit. However, they are not aware of any issues related to it that would cause harm to computers or their accounts. And, there is no need to change passwords because user account information was not compromised through this exploit.

They’re not only focused on quickly resolving exploits when they surface but also on identifying possible vulnerabilities beforehand. This issue is now resolved. Twitter apologize to those who may have encountered it.
